STILL FROM SCREEN (skype)

Questo mio progetto fotografico si basa sull’urgenza di ritrarre una società chiusa nelle proprie case, nelle proprie stanze che ha la necessità di dialogare, di mostrarsi, di esserci, di esibirsi, ma che lo fa attraverso il filtro della webcam. Amicizie, amori, sesso, rabbia, dolcezza, passione, sofferenza… tutto può essere visto e rappresentato attraverso il filtro protettivo dello schermo del proprio computer. Nel limbo della rete siamo tutti liberi di esporci con maggiore serenità. Ecco il bisogno di nobilitare questa umanità di cibernauti, di farne testimonianza, di lasciare una traccia che sia memoria collettiva. Alcuni personaggi di facebook, di myspace, di netlog sono ormai piccole stelle di un universo senza orizzonte. Il ventunesimo secolo è iniziato così, con una società (anche) di individui che riescono a trovare la notorietà, vera o presunta, attraverso l’immagine che danno di se stessi. Tutto ciò mi affascina e non può rimanere inevaso. Non avrebbe senso ritrarre quest’umanità con mezzi diversi da quelli che una tecnologia pret-a-porter ci offre, ecco pertanto la necessità di utilizzare una tecnologia a portata di tutti, semplice, diretta, senza sovrastrutture intellettuali o estetiche. Le persone sono li, dietro al mio schermo, devo solo video-chiamarle e chiedere loro di “esporsi”.

Ovviamente i miei più diretti amici saranno contattati direttamente da me. È una chiacchierata informale di pura conoscenza durante la quale scatterò alcune foto direttamente sullo schermo del computer, vedendovi in diretta. Vi chiederò di raccontarmi di voi, delle vostre abitudini, dei vostri sogni ma in modo del tutto superficiale, nessuno verrà psicanalizzato, mi interessa solo la vostra superficie anche perché non mi permetterei mai di rubarvi dentro. Confido nella vostra disponibilità.

My photography project originates from the need to portray a closed society - with people closed in their homes, their own rooms, their offices - but driven by the need to interact, to show, to be, to perform: all of this through the filter of the webcam.
Friendship, love, sex, anger, sweetness, passion, pain … everything can be seen and represented through the protective filter of your computer screen. Through the Internet we are all free to display ourselves with greater confidence.
Thus arises the need to give dignity to this humanity of cybernauts, to document their lives and make space for them in our collective memory. Some people on facebook, myspace and blogs have become little stars in a universe without limits. The twenty-first century thus began with a society made of individuals who are able to find fame, real or imaginary, through the images they project of themselves.
All of this fascinates me and I cannot let it go undocumented. It would not make sense to portray this world, which also I belong to, by any other means but ready-made technology. So it is fit to use simple and direct technology, available to everyone and without intellectual or aesthetic superstructures. The people are there on my screen. I just have to make a video call and ask them to “expose themselves”.

Mode of operation:

Our interaction will consist of an informal chat during which we will just get to know each other. While chatting, I will take some photos of you as you appear live on the computer screen. I will ask you to tell me about you, your habits, your dreams, but all in a very light and casual manner. No one is going to be probed or psychoanalyzed, I am really only interested in a casual exchange. Hope that you will feel free to participate and I look forward to our chat.
